We recently received a letter from the daughter of Angela Rosina Delafield, Junior Matron at Walhampton, who later went on to marry Patrick Kinght.

27th October 2019

Dear Mr Mills,

I am enclosing some old photographs of your school for you to keep and use as possible archive material. I found these while going through my Mother's letters etc.

Her name was Angela Knight  nee Delafield. She recently passed away at the beginning of September this year at the age of 92 years old. She came to work at Walhampton School in 1946 as Junior Matron. Then I think left in 1949, to return a few years later, stating until 1957 when she became Teacher of the Junior Department. She met my father, Patrick Knight who came to work as a P.E. Teacher (I'm not sure which year). She left in 1957, married him and had me in 1958! She always spoke very fondly of her days at the school, and I can see from the photos what a beautiful place it is.

I have also photocopied any letters etc. I have found which mention Walhampton. I know this is rather ancient history for you in the 2019/2020 academic school year, but thought you would be interested. Please feel free to use any of this collection I have sent you in any newsletters etc.

I hope you will find the enclosed of interest.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Mary Ford (nee Knight)

P.S. My father died in 1990.

Extract from Angela's Eulogy:

After spells in various nannying roles and small nurseries, she landed a job as Matron and eventually Junior Department Teacher at Walhampton School in Lymington. She relished this job and was very happy there, especially as she met a certain PE Teacher... one Patrick Knight, who she told me "chased her round the bushes!". They married in 1957, eventually settling in Queensway, Horsham after a short spell living in Tooting Bec in London, with her beloved Auntie Dorothy.

Three children followed; Mary, Sally and Ian. We had a happy childhood with lots of fun and laughter. Many time she would pack us up a picnic and head off to the beaches of the South Coast, often visiting our cousins in Felpham. The years in Richmond House were very happy ones with lots of parties and a houseful of children swimming in the pool! She would give tea to them all!

Please comment below if you remember Miss Delafield or Patrick Knight, or are one of the boys in her collection of photos. It would be lovely to pass on your memories to her daughter.
